What Can and Can’t Go in a Dumpster Rental?

Dumpster Rental Tips

Renting a driveway dumpster makes home cleanouts, garage projects, moving, and other cleanup jobs much easier. If you're planning a project in St. George, Washington, Hurricane, or the surrounding Southern Utah area, it's important to know what can go in your dumpster and which materials need to be handled separately.

Disposal rules exist for safety, environmental, and landfill requirements. Knowing the rules before your dumpster arrives can save time and prevent unexpected disposal problems.

Here is a practical guide to what you can and can't put in a Drop Load Dump driveway dumpster. You can also learn more about our dump trailer rentals in St. George, Utah.

What Can Usually Go in a Dumpster?

Most ordinary household junk and non-hazardous cleanup debris can be placed in a standard driveway dumpster.

Common acceptable items include:

  • Household clutter
  • Boxes and packaging
  • Old furniture
  • Tables and chairs
  • Mattresses and bed frames
  • Cabinets and shelving
  • Carpet and flooring
  • Clothing and household goods
  • Non-hazardous garage clutter
  • Many types of yard debris
  • Approved remodeling debris

If you're unsure about a particular item, check our What We Take page or contact us before loading it.

Furniture and Household Junk

Furniture is one of the most common things customers need to remove during a cleanout.

Couches, chairs, tables, shelving, dressers, bed frames, and similar household items can generally be loaded into the dumpster.

Breaking down bulky furniture when practical can help you use the available dumpster space more efficiently.

Garage and Storage Items

A driveway dumpster is particularly useful during a garage cleanout because years of unwanted items can be removed without making repeated trips to a disposal facility.

Boxes, broken household items, old shelving, non-hazardous materials, and general clutter can typically be disposed of in the dumpster.

However, garages are also common places to find chemicals, automotive fluids, batteries, paint, and other materials that should not be mixed with ordinary trash.

Can Remodeling Debris Go in the Dumpster?

Many types of non-hazardous remodeling debris may be acceptable, but heavy construction materials require additional consideration because dumpster rentals have weight limits.

Before loading a large amount of remodeling or construction debris, contact Drop Load Dump so we can confirm that the material is appropriate for the trailer.

No Concrete

Drop Load Dump does not accept concrete in our standard driveway dumpster rentals.

Concrete becomes extremely heavy very quickly and requires different disposal and hauling considerations than ordinary household junk.

If your project involves concrete, don't load it into the trailer unless we have specifically discussed and approved another arrangement.

No Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste cannot be placed in a Drop Load Dump dumpster.

Potential household hazardous waste may include:

  • Paint and certain paint products
  • Automotive fluids
  • Gasoline and fuels
  • Pesticides
  • Strong chemicals
  • Some cleaning products
  • Other flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic materials

These products can require specialized collection and disposal.

See our Disposal Guidelines before loading questionable materials.

No Electronics

Electronics are also excluded from our standard dumpster rentals.

That includes items such as televisions, computers, monitors, and similar electronic equipment.

Electronics can contain components that should be recycled or disposed of through an appropriate electronics collection program rather than mixed with ordinary landfill material.

What About Appliances?

Appliances require prior approval from Drop Load Dump.

Some appliances may result in additional disposal charges depending on the item and current disposal requirements.

If you have a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, water heater, or another appliance, contact us before putting it in the dumpster.

Don't Guess About Questionable Items

If you aren't sure whether something can go into the dumpster, don't load it first and ask later.

Send us a picture or description of the item. We would much rather answer the question before delivery or during your rental than discover a prohibited material at pickup.

Watch the Weight

What fits physically in the dumpster isn't the only consideration. Weight matters too.

Drop Load Dump's standard rental includes up to one ton of material. Weight beyond the included amount is billed at the current disposal facility rate.

Dense materials can reach the weight allowance long before the dumpster appears full.

You can review rental costs and weight allowances on our dumpster rental pricing page.
