How to Handle Construction Debris From a Home Remodel

Dumpster Rental Tips

Even a relatively small home remodeling project can produce a surprising amount of debris. For homeowners and contractors in St. George, Washington, and surrounding Southern Utah communities, old flooring, cabinets, trim, packaging, drywall, and demolished materials can quickly take over a garage or driveway.

Planning for construction debris disposal before demolition starts can make the entire remodel easier. A driveway dumpster can help keep your project organized and reduce repeated trips to the disposal facility.

Plan Disposal Before Demolition

Don't wait until you have a giant pile of debris to decide where it will go.

Before starting the project, estimate the types and approximate amount of material you expect to remove.

This also gives you a chance to identify heavy or restricted materials before they get mixed together.

Keep Your Work Area Organized

Construction debris scattered throughout a project creates unnecessary obstacles.

Designate a location for material that will be discarded and move debris out of the active work area regularly.

If you have a driveway dumpster onsite, debris can move directly from the project into the container rather than creating a second pile that must be handled again later.

Separate Reusable Materials

Not everything removed during a remodel necessarily needs to be thrown away.

Depending on condition, cabinets, fixtures, doors, hardware, and other materials may be reusable or suitable for donation.

Separate those items before demolition debris becomes mixed together.

Understand Dumpster Weight

Construction debris can be much denser than ordinary household junk.

A dumpster may look only partially full while already containing a significant amount of weight.

Drop Load Dump's standard rental includes one ton of material. Additional weight is billed at the current disposal facility rate.

See our dumpster rental pricing page for current rental details.

Concrete Is Not Accepted

Drop Load Dump does not accept concrete in our standard driveway dumpster rentals.

Concrete is extremely dense and requires different hauling and disposal planning.

If your remodeling project includes concrete demolition, plan a separate disposal method for that material.

Watch for Hazardous Materials

Hazardous waste is not accepted.

Remodeling projects can uncover old paint, chemicals, solvents, and other products that require appropriate disposal.

Don't throw questionable liquids or chemical products into the dumpster.

Check our Disposal Guidelines or contact us before loading anything you're unsure about.

Don't Mix Electronics Into Remodel Debris

Electronics are also prohibited from our standard dumpster rentals.

If your renovation involves removing televisions, computers, monitors, or similar electronics, keep them separate and use an appropriate electronics recycling or disposal option.

Load Efficiently

Large empty spaces between materials waste dumpster capacity.

When safe and practical:

  • Break down bulky materials.
  • Lay flat materials flat.
  • Place heavier acceptable materials low.
  • Fill gaps with smaller debris.
  • Keep everything within the trailer walls.

Don't Overfill the Dumpster

A dumpster must be safe to transport when it leaves your property.

Do not pile material above the allowable loading area or leave items sticking dangerously out of the trailer.
